Jagannath rath procession, bhajans, and community prasāda.

ରଥଯାତ୍ରା · Rath Yatra
Every summer our families team up with the Hindu Society of Northeast Florida (HSNEF) to bring a slice of Puri to Jacksonville: chariots rolling, drums, puja, and prasāda for anyone who wants to be near the Lord that day.

What is Rath Yatra?
ରଥଯାତ୍ରା means chariot journey. In Puri, three huge wooden raths carry Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra through the streets so devotees can see them and join the pull. The festival is famous worldwide; for us it is also personal. It is the day we explain to our children why grandfather gets quiet when the kirtan starts.
- Lord Jagannath travels with Balabhadra and Subhadra on three sacred chariots.
- In Puri, Odisha, the raths roll along the Grand Road toward the Gundicha Temple, a tradition that has lived for centuries.
- Pulling the ropes or walking beside the chariots is devotion you share with millions on that road.
- The Lord comes outside the temple so everyone on the street can receive darshan.
We cannot replicate the Grand Road in Jacksonville, but we can replicate the feeling: community at the temple, food blessed and shared, and elders smiling when the chariot finally moves.

How we celebrate here
OSNEF does not run the temple, but we show up in force. If you are wondering what to expect, here is how a typical Rath Yatra weekend unfolds with our volunteers and HSNEF.
Plan with the temple
We sit down with HSNEF leadership and our priest early in the year. Dates, who does puja, who handles prasāda, who watches the kids near the chariots: we figure it out together so nothing is a last-minute scramble.
Prepare the ratha
Our volunteers build and paint the chariots, hang garlands, and fuss over the small details. If you have ever walked past the pavilion the week before and heard hammering and laughter, that is us getting ready.
Puja and procession
On the day itself, Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are placed on the ratha. We offer puja, then walk with the chariots while bhajans rise over the parking lot. First-timers are welcome to offer a flower and fall in behind the crowd.
Prasāda together
After the procession, food at the temple is shared with everyone. We want no one to leave hungry. Volunteers stay on their feet until the last tray is wiped clean.
Culture on stage
Odissi, devotional songs, and youth performances usually close the day. Grandparents watch from chairs; teenagers help backstage. It feels like a village fair, just off Kernan Boulevard.
Diamond partner
Chowrastha helped launch OSNEF Diamond sponsorship at Rath Yatra
Rath Yatra was where our first Diamond partnership took shape. Chowrastha stepped forward as OSNEF's founding Diamond sponsor, supporting festival costs, flowers, prasāda, and the cultural program we share with HSNEF and the wider community. We are grateful for their commitment to Odia culture in Northeast Florida.

Come as you are
You are welcome on the road
Whether you grew up in Bhubaneswar or just moved to Jacksonville for work, you can walk with us, offer flowers, and eat prasāda with your shoes still sandy from the parking lot. Neighbors often follow the drums the first time and return the next year with their own kids.
- No ticket. Donations and sponsors, including our Diamond partner Chowrastha help with flowers, food, and safety supplies.
- We always need hands for setup, kitchen, crowd care, and cleanup afterward.
